True Humility…A Tough One!

Some of the ladies from my church are doing a Bible study with me by Priscilla Shirer called, “He Speaks to Me”. I’m really enjoying it, but it’s definitely challenging me as well! It’s about how God desires to speak to us, but that we need to prepare ourselves to listen for His voice. Good stuff!

Oh…and it’s also about humility…ouch! Just when you think you’ve finally achieved that one, you need to repent! And even though I’m playing there, LOL!, still, isn’t humility hard?

I really like the definition of humility from The Bible Exposition Commentary: “knowing, accepting, and being yourself-your best self-for God’s glory.” It’s about avoiding putting our self down or thinking of ourselves as “less than”, but at the same time if we have true humility we won’t brag about ourselves as if we accomplished something on our own merits. We need to remember that the truth is we can’t even take a breath without God!

Sometimes it can seem like a tightrope, but I really like the part about being our best self in order to bring God glory.  Don’t you think that’s refreshing? And wouldn’t it be great to live our lives fully the way we were created to in the first place?

God has amazing plans for us! It’s time for us to “position ourselves”, as Priscilla would say, to truly hear God’s voice. What does He really want from you? Where is He leading? How might He want to use you today?

The answer will be different for each one of us. But one thing is certain, God wants you to be comfortable “in your own skin”. Your Heavenly Father created you, and wants you to be able to come just as you are into His presence. You don’t need to dress up your words, any more than you need to worry about what you’re wearing. What is important is that you worship Him authentically. That you bring all that you are, and place yourself humbly at His feet. As we worship our Lord, it’s pretty hard to be full of ourselves!

God is the only measuring stick we should ever use-comparing ourselves with someone else will get you in trouble every time! It will either make you feel worse about yourself, or perhaps you might catch yourself feeling a little smug that you believe you’re further along in a certain area than your friend is…uh oh! There goes the humility!!

Let’s pray that our Heavenly Father will teach us what we need to learn in this area. I don’t know about you, but this is an area that I could use some help in! Yet I want God to be able to use me to the fullest.

Here’s a good verse that reflects this thought: “For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgement, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned”. Romans 12:3

Have a great day!!
