Have you ever come home feeling kind of out of sorts? You’re not even sure what’s wrong, but you just want the discomfort to be gone?
It certainly happens to me. Even if I have a good day, sometimes I can just feel “off”, and I’m not even sure why.
That’s when I have a choice. What am I going to do about it? Where will I turn?
I’m sorry to admit that more often than not my first instinct, and the one I frequently give into, is to look for a distraction. Maybe it’s turning to comfort food, or escaping into a good book. Or I just try to get busy doing something, to take my mind off my unsettled emotions. Whatever it is, the goal is to find my equilibrium again…to “feel good”.
The problem isn’t with the thing I’m turning to—it’s that I’m not turning to the only One who can help me figure out what’s going on with my heart.
Sometimes it’s the Lord’s way of getting my attention. I can be oblivious to the undercurrents of things that have affected me during my day. Maybe I had an unsettling conversation, or something happened that triggered a painful memory. The Holy Spirit may be prompting me to come to Him so that He can help me to resolve whatever it is that is robbing me of my peace and joy.
When I choose to turn to Jesus, He has a way of putting it all in perspective. My mind clears, and I find that I can rest in His presence.
Jesus said, to, “…Come to Me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” Matthew 11:28 – 30 NLT (emphasis is mine)
When I stop, and bring whatever is bothering me to the Lord, He gives me a peace that I could never find on my own. It doesn’t matter what the problem is, Jesus is always the solution. When we look to Him, He can soothe our troubled spirits.
Even when the emotions are raging, and we can identify the feeling quite easily, Jesus will meet us right where we are. We just need to be honest. We just need to turn to the only One who truly “gets” us.
How about you? Do you feel that peace that is beyond explanation? Do you sense that God has you – sees you – no matter what your circumstances are? If not, Jesus is right there. Bring your burden to Him, and He will lift it.
1 Peter 5:7 says,” Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you.” NLT
There’s a song by the Martins that is so beautiful. It expresses exactly what I’m talking about. I hope you take the time to click the link and listen to it. It has helped me find that peace in the midst of my trouble emotions. http://youtu.be/EqiLWWxZulM
